Joseph V. Mercer, 65, of Southampton, lost his battle with cancer on March 18, 2020 in the first days of the Covid shutdown. In his final moments he was surrounded by his family. Joe was born in West Patterson, NJ on November 18, 1954 to the late Robert R. and Evelyn (Waskiewicz) Mercer Jr. While his family knows him as a caring and loving father, he was also active in the community. When his children were young, Joe volunteered for the Easthampton Soccer League, touching the lives of many. He enjoyed being active from hiking, to traveling around New England in the winter to ski, to kayaking the local rivers all year round. He also enjoyed making his own craft beer, spending time with his family, playing epic cribbage matches, and setting off fireworks for any and no occasion. Joe will be greatly missed by his daughter, Allysa Mercer and her partner Alexander Brash of Long Island City, NY, son Ian Mercer of Chicopee, son Seth Mercer and his wife Caira of Chicopee, and his grandchildren, Kaylee Mercer, Joey Mercer, and Sofia Mercer Brash. Joe also leaves his brothers, Robert R. Mercer III and his wife Janice of Chicopee, James P. Mercer and his wife Margaret of South Hadley, and Russell S. Mercer of Bellows Falls, VT, and many nieces and nephews. Due to Covid the family will be having a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation in Joe's name to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123. The Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
