Leon F. Sobon, age 89, of Chicopee, passed away on Friday, January 12, 2024 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. He was born in Holyoke, the son of the late Leo and Mary (Adams) Sobon and was a 1952 graduate of Holyoke High School where he served as class president. Leon attended Holyoke Community College, and was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War era. During his active duty in the Army Leon was stationed in Tokyo, Japan. In 1958 he was transferred into the Army Reserves at Fort Devens in Massachusetts until his honorable discharge in 1962. He was a letter carrier for the Holyoke Post Office for many years, retiring in 1993. Leon had lived in Chicopee since 1969, and was a third- degree member of Knights of Columbus Council 69 in Chicopee. He was a parishioner of the former Saint Mary of the Assumption Church and Saint Anne Church in Chicopee. He was the widower of Dorothy (Wilson) Sobon, who predeceased him in 1995. Leon is survived by four sons: John and his wife Meyi of Chappaqua, NY, James and his wife Fran of Southampton, MA, Gerald and his wife Ingrid of Fiskdale, MA, and Christopher “Todd” and his fiancee Sharon of Chicopee, MA; his grandchildren Sarah Carmel (Adam), Katie Donovan (Bridget), Julie (Chase), Angelina, Matthew, Camila, and Hannah Sobon; and five great grandchildren; his brother Michael “Richie” Sobon and his wife Joan of South Hadley, MA; his sister Kristine Fontaine and her husband Raymond of Holyoke, MA.; and many nieces and nephews. Leon was a lifelong fan of all the New England professional sport teams. He loved spending time with his family. The Sobon family would like to thank the staff at Day Brook Village in Holyoke for the compassionate care shown to Leon. It is deeply appreciated. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Theresa of Lisieux Church, 9 East Parkview Drive, South Hadley. Burial will follow at Mater Dolorosa Cemetery in South Hadley. Calling hours will be held AT THE CHURCH on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass at 11:00. The family requests that masks be worn for the visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of the Soldier’s Home in Holyoke, Inc. PO Box 1338, Holyoke MA 01041.
