Luis Alicea-Estrella, age 90, of West Springfield, MA, passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2022 at Baystate Medical Center. He was born on March 8, 1932, in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico, one of six children of the late Andrea Estrella and Clemente Alicea. He joined the US Army in 1953 and was assigned to CO “F” 12th INF REGT APO 39. A proud veteran of the Korean War Era, Luis was awarded the Army of Occupation (Germany) and National Defense Service Medals and was honorably discharged in 1954. After his Army service, he joined the US Coast Guard, serving as a Merchant Seaman until his discharge in 1966. After serving his country, Luis attended the University of Massachusetts majoring in Sociology. He loved flying and later took flying lessons, earning his pilot’s license in 1976. Flying was one of Luis’s greatest passions and he took to the skies often in his single engine Cessna airplane. Luis loved watching boxing and never missed an opportunity to watch a fight. He loved spending time with his family and friends; they will all miss him. Luis is survived by his adult children: Luis Alicea, Carlos Alicea and his wife Norma Alicea, Ivan Ricky Alicea and his wife Dinorah Alicea, Loumag Alicea and his partner Christina Gonzalez, Louis A. Alicea and his partner Evelyn Ortiz, Patricia Alicia and her partner Jose Vega, and Sonia Alicea and her partner Ismael Flores; his grandchildren: Joey, Louann, Brenely Marie, Joey, Angeline, Norma, Marangeline, Ivan, Josue, Anthony, Amanda, Amaya, Isaiah, Demille, Tayne, Danato, Jonathan, Yesenia, Giselle, Yaslin, Caleb, Josue, Nathan, and Ishmael; 31 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Besides his parents and his wife, Luis was predeceased by his five siblings: Delia, Angelita, Marcelino, Saturnina, and Enrique. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial for Luis on Friday, May 6th at 10:00 am at Immaculate Conception Church, 54 North Summer Street, followed by burial in Saint Jerome Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 5th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street. “Dad, it was a great run. Until we meet again, rest easy and bask in God’s glory. We will carry on with you always in our hearts.”
