With heavy hearts, we announce the unexpected passing of Madeline “Maggie” Centeno, age 62, on April 2, 2026.
Maggie was born in Salinas, Puerto Rico, the beloved daughter of the late Marcos Centeno and Carmen Rita Hernandez. In 1985, she moved from Puerto Rico to Holyoke, Massachusetts, where she built her life and lovingly raised her children.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Agnes Centeno of Chicopee, and her son, Marcos Centeno and his wife, Carmen Centeno-Rivera, of West Springfield. Maggie was a proud and loving grandmother to five grandchildren who were the light of her life: Alex Rivera, Nevaeh Centeno, Camilla Centeno, Marcos Centeno Jr., and Laniyah Ramos. Her grandchildren brought her endless joy, and she treasured every moment spent with them.
Maggie was one of nine siblings. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Carol Zuleima Centeno and Elizabeth Centeno. She leaves behind her loving siblings Israel Centeno, Melvin Centeno, Robert Centeno, Delia Centeno, Aida Centeno, and Ibrahim Centeno, along with many nieces, nephews, great nephews, and cousins whom she loved dearly. She also shared a special bond with her beloved aunt, Maria Martinez, whom she considered a mother figure.
Madeline retired after many years working in food service, a career that reflected her nurturing spirit and love for caring for others. Maggie was incredibly special to so many throughout Holyoke. She was not only a devoted mother to her own children but a mother figure to anyone who walked through her doors, especially her children’s friends, who always found comfort, guidance, and unconditional love in her home.
Cooking was one of Maggie’s greatest joys. Anyone who visited her knew they would be greeted first with warmth, laughter, and a plate of homemade food. Her kitchen was a place of gathering, love, and connection. Maggie was a strong, compassionate, and loving woman whose courageous smile could brighten any room. She gave endlessly of herself, always placing her family first and surrounding everyone she loved with care and protection.
Her legacy lives on through the love she shared, the lives she touched, and the family she cherished above all else. Maggie will be deeply missed but forever remembered for her kindness, strength, and the warmth she brought into the world.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday April 14 from 4:00 to 7:00pm in the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke. There is no burial at this time.
