Margaret Lawrence Obituary

Margaret M. “Marge” (Fox) Lawrence, age 94, a longtime resident of Holyoke, passed away in West Springfield on Wednesday evening, November 30, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Holyoke, daughter of the late Francis and Katheryn (Clark) Fox, and lived there for the first 65 years of her life, moving to West Springfield in 1992. Marge was a graduate of the former Sacred Heart High School in Holyoke and was the last surviving member of the Class of 1945. She went on to further her education and graduated from the Providence School of Nursing. She worked for many years at various area nursing homes, retiring in 1989 to assist in caring for her grandchildren while their parents worked. Marge was very proud of her Irish heritage and loved attending the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade with her daughter, Sheila, and Sheila’s best friend, Linda. She was a big Celtics fan back in the days of Cousey, Russell, and Havlicek. Besides her parents, Marge is predeceased by the love of her life, Thomas E. Lawrence (2004), as well as her three brothers, Francis Fox, Rev. James Fox, and Raymond Fox. She leaves behind her son, Thomas Lawrence; daughter, Sheila DeDeurwaerder; and son, James Lawrence and his wife Kathleen. She will also be missed by her grandchildren: Erin, Kara, Patrick, Jessica, James, and Sean; great-grandchildren: Chelsie, Jacob, Michaella, and Charlotte; and great-great-grandchildren: Ava, Ivey, and Aidan. A special shout out to Jessica for all that she did whether it was nightly phone calls, weekly dinners, or anything else her “bestie” needed. Marge liked to remember the “old days,” whether it was Sunday dinners in Amherst with her brother, “Bronc” and his wife, Peg and their family, or summer vacations to Hampton Beach with her in-laws, Bob and Charlotte. Marge never got a driver’s license so everyone took turns driving her around. She always said that if she had to walk it was a longer trip for her because her legs were shorter. The family would like to thank the staff of Bear Mountain at West Springfield for their compassionate care especially in her last few days. Calling hours will be held for Marge on Tuesday, December 6th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke. Relatives and friends are asked to meet for a Committal Service on Wednesday, December 7th at 10:00 am in the Chapel of the MA Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marge’s memory to the American Cancer Society (MA), PO Box 1120, Framingham, MA 01701.
