Margaret R. “Peggy” (O’Connor) O’Connell, age 88, of Holyoke, passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. She was born in Holyoke, a daughter of the late Michael J. and Margaret M. (Ryan) O’Connor and was a 1955 graduate of Saint Jerome High School. A Registered Nurse for forty years, Peggy graduated from the former Providence Hospital School of Nursing in 1958. She worked at Framingham Union Hospital and then started at Providence Hospital in the Children’s Ward for ten years then the Emergency Department for twenty years, retiring in 1996. She was a devoted member of the Providence Hospital Alumni Association, and faithful communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church. Peggy was the widow of David P. O’Connell, who predeceased her on December 14, 2002. She is survived by five children: Daniel, Mary Beth DeLisi (Steve), Michael (Helen), James (Laurie) and Kevin; Peggy was Nana to her beloved grandchildren Charlie, Justin, Lauren, Kristen (Sam O’Connor), David (Deidre), Elizabeth, Sarah (Treyson Hopper), Davis and Rachel; her treasured great-grandchildren: Lucas & Madison Spell and Cathan Michael O’Connor; daughters-in-law Allison O’Connell and Jordana Mausel O’Connell, and her many cherished nieces and nephews and their families. Peggy had many wonderful friends, including her best friends Gail Gaughan, Ethel Kennedy, Maureen Murphy, Janet Chagnon and Erica Blanchette. Besides her husband and parents, Peg was predeceased by four siblings: Mary Hamel, Patrick O’Connor, Christine Wiselogel, and Daniel O’Connor. The funeral will be held Monday, July 28 at 8:30 a.m. from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, followed by a Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street. Committal will be held at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam. Calling hours will be Sunday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.at the funeral home.
