Marie Murray Obituary

Marie B. (nee O’Brien) Murray, also known as ReRe, Misery, Gram, Gar, and the “best mother-in-law in the world,” of Holyoke died on Friday July 1, 2022, at 89 years old. She was born and educated in Holyoke, beloved daughter of the late John J. O’Brien and Gertrude (Moré) O’Brien.

Marie is survived by her sister Joan Ducharme (Ed), and her children Michael Murray (Lynn), Paul Murray, Cathy Martin (Michael), Annemarie Morin (Bob) and Susan Grossman (George), grandchildren Daniel Murray, Cameron Wells (Emily), Patrick Wells (Sebastian), and great grandchild Elizabeth Grace Wells.  Marie is predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Joseph Murray, her son Joey, her brothers Dr. Robert O’Brien and Rev. Jack O’Brien, and her daughter-in-law, Paula Perfito.  Marie also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews, family, and friends.

Marie taught at Miss Joan’s Storybook Nursery School and cared for many children through the years whom she welcomed into her home and her heart.

Marie’s spirituality was central to who she was and how she lived.  A devout Catholic, Marie served as an extraordinary minister at Blessed Sacrament Church and taught CCD at Jericho. Marie actively participated in Cursillo for many years where she developed many life-long friendships and spiritual connections.

What Marie enjoyed most of all was having family and friends around the dining table – she was an amazing cook, and there was always room for one more.  Always good for a joke and a song, our Mom told us she wanted to come back as a wooden spoon in the kitchen of a good cook.

Marie always had a zest for life and exploring new things. She had an inquisitive mind and enjoyed expanding her understanding of the world through travel.  At 85 years old she started taking art lessons which was a bright spot in her week. She discovered her untapped talent and shared her passion as she painted something uniquely special for many family members.

The family wishes to especially thank the Providence Place Community and the compassionate, loving staff at Mary’s Meadow who ushered Mom through her final days.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, July 6th at 9:30 a.m. from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke, MA followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
