Marilyn Theresa (Burton) Sharples Obituary

Marilyn Theresa Burton Sharples, born in Los Angeles November 10, 1951, to Barbara Newhall and Kenneth Tozer, passed away peacefully at her home in Vero Beach, Florida, on January 27, 2026, at the age of 74.  Adopted by Raymond Burton, Marilyn grew up alongside her siblings—Kenneth (deceased), Alan, and Barbara—dividing her early years between Hermosa Beach, California, and Framingham, Massachusetts. She was lovingly raised in part by her Nana, Grace Dorothy Ryan, whose care helped shape her resilient and warm spirit.

Despite life's challenges, Marilyn blossomed into a compassionate, witty woman whose sense of humor remained unwavering throughout her life. She cherished the outdoors, finding joy in fishing and horseback riding, and maintained a lifelong passion for learning. She pursued studies at Holyoke Community College earning an associate’s degree and held deep pride in her country and the fact that she was born on the Marine Corps birthday.

Marilyn devoted many years to caring for Dorothy Taft, becoming a beloved member of the Taft family. She later built a successful career at Holyoke National Bank, advancing from teller to Assistant Branch Manager at the Court Square location. In addition to her banking work, she was a talented photographer and licensed real estate agent.

On February 27, 1982, Marilyn married the love of her life, Charles Patrick "Chuck" Sharples. Their 44 years of marriage were filled with shared adventures, mutual support, and enduring love.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Chuck; her brother Alan (Gwen) and sister Barbara (David Early); her step-children Tamara (Felix Zayas) and Philip Sharples; her grandchildren Chloe and Eli; and a wide circle of extended family members and cherished friends.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 20, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 27 Somers Road, Hampden, Massachusetts. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Springfield, with a reception afterward at Route 20 Restaurant in Wilbraham.
