Mary Deborah Carroll

Mary Deborah Carroll, age 58, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2022 at her home in Holyoke, MA. Born on March 2, 1964 in Springfield, MA, Mary was the daughter of William S. Carroll and the late Filomena “Sandy” Carroll and lived her whole life in Holyoke. A trained CNA, Mary worked various jobs over the years that always focused on helping others in need; she worked in elder care, and at The Center School and at Blessed Sacrament School, both in Holyoke.

Mary loved the sunshine, wading in the ocean, collecting sea treasures, and getting a tan. She loved dragonflies and manatees for their symbolism of hope, transformation, and tranquility. She had a green thumb and loved flowers in all their bright colors, anything purple was always her favorite. She had a propensity for buying gifts for people she cared for any time she came across something that reminded her of them. Her handwriting was incredible and distinctly her own. Above all else, Mary loved family and she worshiped her children, Brendan, Jack, Patrick, and Grace. A perfect day for Mary would have been to be surrounded by all her kids, laughing, teasing, and storytelling, capped off with snapping a picture of all four of them together on a set of stairs. She was sensitive but loved to joke; she was loyal to and loved by her friends and family; she was creative and spiritual and we all loved her so much.

Mary is survived by her father, William S. Carroll of Holyoke; her beloved children, Brendan J. Hamel and his wife, Rebecca G. Hamel of Plymouth, Patrick S. Hamel of Plymouth, John “Jack” L. Hamel of Holyoke, and Grace C. Hamel of Boston; her brother, Stephen Carroll of Seattle, and her cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. We will all miss her immensely.

A Funeral Service will be held for Mary on Monday, August 1, 2022 at 12 noon at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke, MA. Burial will follow in Saint Jerome Cemetery, also in Holyoke. Calling hours will be held prior to the service on Monday morning beginning at 10:00 am.
