Mary Patricia (Kane) Scagni, age 81, of Holyoke, passed away peacefully at Cape Cod Hospital on Monday, January 29, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. Pat was born in Holyoke, daughter of the late John and Mary (Schirch) Kane, and was a proud member of the Holyoke High School class of 1960. After high school, she graduated from the Providence Hospital School of Nursing. As a Registered Nurse, Pat worked as a surgical nurse at the Holyoke Soldiers Home, as a charge nurse at the Holyoke Geriatric Center, as a public health nurse at the Holyoke Board of Health, as a school nurse at Dean Vocational High School, and retired as a nursing supervisor for the Holyoke Public Schools. Over the years and into retirement, Pat traveled extensively with her beloved Ernie on river cruises to over twenty-five countries, to their homes on the shores of Connecticut and Cape Cod, and to countless locales throughout the United States. Pat’s most impressive trait was her devotion to family. Pat was a talented crafter of sentimental keepsakes, an enthusiastic genealogist who mapped the family tree back to the 1600’s, a devoted second mother to many, and a compassionate caretaker for all in her extended family. She was the widow of Ernest D. Scagni, who died on June 22, 2018. Pat is survived by her brother John C. Kane and his wife Janice M. Kane of Baldwinsville, NY, her son Ernest J. Scagni and his wife Nicole A. (D’Addario) Scagni of Indio, CA, her daughter Mary A. Sanborn and her husband Robert P. Sanborn III of Yarmouthport, MA, her daughter Maureen E. Dickinson and her husband Robert E. Dickinson of Harwichport, MA, her grandchildren Robert P. Sanborn IV, Michael A. Sanborn and Katherine M. Sanborn and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held for Pat on Friday, February 2nd from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke. The funeral will be held on Saturday, February 3rd at 9:30 am from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, both in Holyoke. Committal will be held on Monday, February 5th at 10:30 am at Hillcrest Park Cemetery, Section N, 895 Parker Street, Springfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mary “Pat” Scagni Memorial Scholarship Fund for Cape Cod Tech Health Technology students aspiring to become a registered nurse. Contributions to the fund should be made payable to the Cape Cod Tech Foundation, 351 Pleasant Lake Avenue, Harwich, MA 02645.
