Robert Goss Obituary

Robert K. Goss of Holyoke was born and raised in Holyoke. Son of Robert M. Goss and Constance K. Goss he attended local schools and then High School in Putney, VT. Following high school he graduated with Highest Honors ni Music from Williams College, then earned a Master of Music Degree from Yale. He taught school for a number of years at both the High School and University levels. He was a professional singer (bass/baritone, performing with Commonwealth Opera), teacher, conductor and composer. After teaching he returned to Holyoke and entered the insurance business via his family's firm. After several years he separated from the firm and carried on his own insurance brokerage business. Active in community affairs, he was a member of the Holyoke Rotary Club and Board Member and Chair of the Holyoke Taxpayers Association. He worked for the Cancer Fund, the United Way, the Holyoke Hospital Campaign, and worked for many years as a Board Member and then Chair of Providence Ministries for the Needy. He also served as Board Member and Chair of the MA Arts Lottery Commission. With his prior wife Linda he founded and acted as President and Music Director of the Victory Players, a community theater group in the area. The group was invited to take part in an International Competition in Ireland and won first place with a rousing performance of the hit musical "Nunsense". He was an enthusiastic lifelong fisherman, especially stream fishing for trout, and in addition he was an avid gardener. He was predeceased by his wife Bobbe Hart of Holyoke. He is survived by his sister, three children Annie, Debbie and Adam, all of whom live out of state, a grandson David Conaway from Maine and four nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his four step children, Constance, Donna, David and JoAnn. Numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren, many of whom Bob taught to fish. All services will be private.
