Teresa Marie Coutu, 91, of South Hadley (formerly of Holyoke), passed away peacefully, at home on February 2, 2023. Born in Hatfield on November 28, 1931, Teresa attended Smith Academy, where she enjoyed participating in girls' sports. She attended Northampton Commercial College, pursuing a career at Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company in Springfield, Ma., where she worked until her retirement. On January 16, 1954, she married John Coutu at Mater Dolorosa Church in Holyoke, Ma. Teresa and John were married for 52 years until John's death on May 18, 2006. Her leisure time boating on the Connecticut River with family and friends and taking snowmobile trips to Northern Vermont were happy times. Preparing Polish food for her family was a tribute to her heritage. Teresa was known for her delicious lemon meringue pie. Holiday time found her making a loaf of special bread for every family member. She remained active after she lost her husband and in her retirement. Her devotion to her church was a big part of her retirement life. She served as a volunteer at Holyoke Blessed Sacrament church and school. The plaque presented to her for her 36yrs of school service gave her tremendous pride.The family was of foremost importance to Teresa. She leaves behind her four children, David Coutu and his wife Gail of Guilford, VT, Mark Coutu and his wife Mary of Litchfield , AZ, Kathleen Sampson and her husband Mark of Longmeadow, MA, and Matthew Coutu and his wife Rebecca of Beverly, MA. Her five grandchildren Lindsay, Casey, Alexandra Coutu, Adam, and Kyle Sampson; great-grandchildren Dylan and Ellia Coutu. She was predeceased by her parents Bernard and Helena (Zukowski) Nartowicz and, brother Carl Nartowicz. We acknowledge the superb care provided to Teresa by the entire staff at Caring Solutions, her friends, and her neighbors.The funeral will be held Wednesday morning, February 8th at 8:30 from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, Holyoke. Burial will follow at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, February 7th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
