Terrance B. "Terry" Sugrue Obituary

Terrance B. “Terry” Sugrue Sr., 85, of South Hadley, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2025, in Holyoke. Born on June 23, 1939, in Holyoke to Roger F. and Anne M. (Ryan) Sugrue, Terry remained deeply rooted in the community that shaped him. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Holyoke, where his athletic talents began to shine. His baseball prowess, and devastating curve ball, earned him a scholarship to New York University. Terry’s love for sports extended far beyond his youth. He was honored as a member of the Holyoke Catholic High Sports Hall of Fame for both baseball and basketball—an enduring testament to his dedication and skill.  After college, Terry embarked on a distinguished professional journey that spanned several decades and industries. He began at Worthington Corporation as manager of the data processing department before moving on to Moore Drop Forge Company. He later joined Smith & Wesson as Director of Information, where he played a key role in advancing the company’s technological capabilities. In 1976, Terry took a bold step into entrepreneurship by founding a small manufacturing business. Under his leadership, the company became a military subcontractor producing parts for the M1A1 tank and served as a supplier to numerous firearms companies throughout the Northeast. His commitment to supporting the armed forces extended beyond business; he also founded and presided over the Pioneer Valley Chapter of the Association of the U.S. Army.

He was predeceased by his be loved wife of 53 years Gertrude E. (McKenna) Sugrue; his son Terrance B. Sugrue Jr.; his parents Roger F. and Anne M. (Ryan) Sugrue; his brother Roger F. Sugrue; and sisters Marjorie Ann Shepardson and Ann Marie Cunningham. Terry was a devoted familyman who cherished time with his loved ones. He is survived by his son Timothy Sugrue and Timothy’s partner Andrea Filipkowski; his daughter LeslieAnn Sugrue; grandchildren Caitlin Sugrue and John LaMontagne; and great-grandchildren Riley, Payton, and Lillian; and cousin Ellie Monsko. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.

He found joy in life’s simple pleasures—playing baseball in his younger years and later enjoying rounds of golf with his brother and lifelong friends. A passionate sports fan through and through, Terry could often be found cheering—and occasionally yelling at his beloved Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots, and Bruins. Special thanks to Ray Rondeau, Kenny McKenna, Bob Major, and Danny Fay for their friendship and support. Terry will be remembered as a caring father, loving husband, dedicated professional and spirit ed sports enthusiast whose legacy lives on through those who knew him best. May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his loss.
