Thomas E. "Ted" Chalmers, Jr. Obituary
Thomas Edwin Chalmers Jr (Ted), 83, longtime resident of Holyoke and local auto-racing legend, died Tuesday, March 25, at his residence. Ted was born and raised in Holyoke, the only son to T. Edwin Sr. and Kathryn (Murray) Chalmers. He was educated in Holyoke schools and started his auto-racing career at the age of 19. Throughout his working career, Ted was known for his hard work ethic. Working in many trades as a mechanic, welder, tow-truck driver, and truck driver, Ted created his value as a self-learner and as the one that could always get it done. If no one else could do it, “Teddy could do it.” Ted was a proud man who liked to do things his way. His true passion was driving and racing cars. For 34 years, he raced cars up and down the east coast at local race tracks. Primary race tracks were Monadnock Speedway, Riverside Speedway, and Stafford Motor Speedway. Ted made a name for himself as a tough competitor and hard driver. He won multiple races, a track championship, and had many fans. His racing career spanned many years and many divisions because he just loved to race cars and did it like no other. Ted is predeceased by his first wife, Nancy Chalmers MacKay, and second wife, Carol Chalmers. Survivors include three sons: Robert Chalmers of Vermont, Thomas E Chalmers III of North Carolina, Timothy Chalmers of Maine, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and their families. The family would like to thank Ted’s longtime friends, Chuck Williams, and Jimmy Bryden, for their continual loyalty and care, along with the racing community for their support. Visitation will be held Monday, March 31, 2025, from 9am to 10:30am with a service to follow at the Barry J Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton St in Holyoke. Burial to follow at St Jerome Cemetery.
