William A. Smith

William A. Smith, age 68, of Chicopee, MA, passed away unexpectedly at 7:17pm on Monday, April 17, 2023 at Baystate Medical Center. Bill was the son of Elige Smith and Marilyn Rael and graduated from Dean Tech High School in Holyoke. Bill was a proud employee at Northeast Utilities and Eversource for over 40 years. He loved helping others and took pride in “powering up” neighborhoods and communities with electricity; his coworkers, who knew him by “Smitty,” were like family to him. Bill enjoyed tending to his yard, chatting with his neighbors, working on cars, and going to car shows. He was able to restore his first, a 1972 Dodge Charger, which he adored. Bill also loved trips to Disney World and Vero Beach with his family. Bill was predeceased by his parents, Elige and Marilyn; his beloved wife of 41 years, Cynthia (Janik) Smith; his brothers, Jimmy and Gerald, and his sister, Ann. He is survived by his three loving children: Nicholas, Ashley, and Sean; daughter-in-law, Desirae; sister, Evelyn Manijak; brother-in-law, Mike Manijak; brother, John Smith; sister-in-law, Linda Smith; sister-in-law, Lisa Smith; brother-in-law, Francis Janik; brother-in-law, Steven Janik; many nieces and nephews and their children, and “the pets,” Leonard and Lilly, who were his favorite cat and dog duo. Bill had a larger-than-life personality and will be missed by many. He can finally enjoy eternal “retirement” with his wife. Calling hours for Bill will be held on Wednesday, April 26th from 4pm to 7pm at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Saturday, April 29th at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control & Adoption Center, 627 Cottage Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
