William S. Carroll, age 88, of Holyoke, passed away on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at Holyoke Medical Center. He was born in Springfield, son of the late Walter J. and Madeline A. (Broughton) Carroll, was educated in Springfield parochial schools including Cathedral High School, and graduated from Saint Michael’s College in Vermont. Bill was a United States Army veteran, serving in the First Cavalry Division from 1957 to 1961 performing counter intelligence duties in Korea among other assignments. He was a longtime plant manager for several paper companies including Graham Manufacturing, and later was co-owner and founder of NRG Manufacturing. After retirement, Bill worked for WestMass ElderCare for over 2 decades. He enjoyed travelling, and visited all 50 states as well as numerous European destinations. He was a communicant of Holy Cross Parish, and a longtime member of the Holyoke Canoe Club and Military Intelligence Association of New England. Bill was the widower of Filomena R. “Sandy” (Rico) Carroll, who died on April 27, 1997. He is survived by a son, Stephen W. Carroll and his wife Candace of Washington; four grandchildren: Brendan, Patrick, and Grace Hamel, and Michael Carroll, and several nieces and nephews, including Stephanie Kowalczyk and Brian Downey. Besides his parents and wife, Bill was predeceased by his daughter, Mary Carroll, a grandson, John “Jack” Hamel, and sister, Mary Anne Downey. A funeral service will be held for Bill on Friday, November 17th at 12 noon at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, followed by burial in Saint Jerome Cemetery, 1666 Northampton Street, both Holyoke. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home prior to the service beginning at 10:00 am.
