William R. Meckel, 87, passed away on June 17, 2022, with his family by his side.
Bill was born and raised in Holyoke, graduating from Sacred Heart High School and the University of Massachusetts after studying physics. Bill spent time working at the White House as a communications specialist while serving in the army during the Korean War. He worked for IBM in Springfield for many years and then started his own programming company, ending his career at Deerfield Plastics. For many years after retirement, he and Barbara lived in Orleans, on Cape Cod.
Bill is survived by his high school sweetheart, Barbara, and their four children, James Meckel and his wife Mary O’Leary of Prairie Village, Kansas, Maureen McCarthy and her husband Jonathan of Southampton, Ann Cloutier and her husband John, and Theresa Meckel and her husband, David Nichols from Holyoke; along with seven granddaughters and five great-granddaughters. He will miss meeting his first great grandson, who will be born in August.
Bill volunteered for the AIM Thrift Shop in Wellfleet, the Senior Center in Northampton, and for FISH, providing transportation to medical appointments on Cape Cod.
His family thanks the staff in the telemetry unit at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital for such compassionate care.
All services are private. The Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
